Polio - A Muslim Disease

During President Obama's speech in Cairo this week, he mentioned the following concerning polio:
Today I'm announcing a new global effort with the Organization of the Islamic Conference to eradicate polio. And we will also expand partnerships with Muslim communities to promote child and maternal health.

All these things must be done in partnership. Americans are ready to join with citizens and governments; community organizations, religious leaders, and businesses in Muslim communities around the world to help our people pursue a better life. - White House
But wait, Polio was all but headed for complete eradication, until Muslims f*cked it up.
In 2006 only four countries in the world (Nigeria, India, Pakistan, and Afghanistan) were reported to have endemic poliomyelitis. Cases in other countries are attributed to importation. - Wikipedia
AND:
A major factor in the failure of polio immunization programs is opposition by Muslim fundamentalists. In Pakistan and Afghanistan, the Taliban have issues fatwas opposing vaccination as an attempt to avert Allah's will, and as an American plot to sterilize Muslims. The Taliban have kidnapped, beaten, and assassinated vaccination workers and officials. In February 2007, physician Abdul Ghani, who was in charge of polio immunizations in a key area of disease occurrence in northern Pakistan, was killed in a terrorist bombing. In July 2007, a student traveling from Pakistan imported the first polio case to Australia in over 20 years. - Wikipedia
To compare the US has been the driving force to eradicate polio, having its last natural case in 1979. The Western Hemisphere was declared Polio free in 1994. I am not sure how much more we are expected to do. After all, the extremists are not going to join any partnership with the US to eradicate polio. After all, if a child dies, regardless of receiving and medical aid, they use the death as an opportunity to blame the US for it. This is just one more reason to fight the Taliban. Modern society is simply not compatible with their beliefs.

What is needed is to force the Muslim world to educate their populations. And by education, I do not mean memorizing the Koran.

Stupid Double-Standard for Minor Children - Abortion and Death Penalty

How is it possible that children are no longer eligible for the death penalty in cases of murder simply because they are under the age of 18 and therefore not completely responsible for their actions, and yet they are somehow responsible enough to purchase 'abortion pills', not only without permission of the parents, but even without having to see a doctor?
The Food and Drug Administration said Wednesday it would accept, not appeal, a federal judge's order that lifts Bush administration restrictions limiting over-the-counter sales of "Plan B" to women 18 and older. U.S. District Judge Edward Korman ruled last month in a lawsuit filed in New York that President George W. Bush's appointees let politics, not science, drive their decision to restrict over-the-counter access.

Women's groups said the FDA's action was long overdue, since the agency's own medical reviewers had initially recommended that the contraceptive be made available without any age restrictions.

Korman ordered the FDA to let 17-year-olds get the birth control pills. He also directed the agency to evaluate clinical data to determine whether all age restrictions should be lifted. - Breitbart
This is the height of Government, and dare I say Liberal, stupidity and irresponsibility.

This is part of a larger battle where liberals are fighting for the right of minors to get an abortion without parental permission. See my comments on this issue here: Minors, the Death Penalty and Abortion

If 17 year-old 'children' are so responsible, then let's change the law so that you are treated as an adult at age 17 and not 18. Then they can go get abortions without having to tell their parents and can also face the justice system as an adult when they end up on the wrong side of the law. These half-ass measures just makes being a parent more difficult and exposes children to much more dangerous and risky behavior. (Not for anything, but if this pill was available back in the 60's, we might not have the President that we have now, given that his mother got pregnant when she was 17...)

Obama Agrees: UN Blames US for African Condom Shortage!

A couple of years ago the Bush Administration decided that out of all the money being sent to Africa, that he wanted American donations to be used to teach Africans to avoid getting AIDS by learning the ABC's (Abstain, Be Faithful, Use Condoms) Well the UN and other NGOs were a little pissed off that the US decided to add some conditions to the money they were handing out like it was free water. Take this sob story:
"A lot of the family-planning associations in Africa refused the terms of the gag rule and they lost funding, they lost technical assistance and they lost contraceptives,'' said Wendy Turnbull, a senior policy research analyst with Population Action International in Washington. - Bloomberg
Oh please. Two questions here:
1. Where the hell is there own Government?
2. Where the hell is the rest of the world?
As I pointed out in my previous post on this subject 'UN Blames US for African Condom Shortage!' even though the US is not interested in paying for free condoms for all of Africa, what about letting the rest of the world give some money to help Africa. Where the hell are they? Where are their own Governments?

Not only that, if these people are too cheap to buy condoms for themselves then maybe they deserve to get AIDS. Really, if they are too cheap to buy them, and we know that money is not an issue because AIDS is spreading through Africa because of prostitution, then what makes anyone think that they are going to put these free condoms on?
Presently too many people in Africa are having sex without condoms. This is a clear sign that people either do not know about AIDS or don't care about getting AIDS. If they knew about the dangers of unprotected sex and high-risk sex there is no way that any sane person would have unprotected sex. It would be worth it to them to spend a couple of cents it would cost to buy a condom.

Concerned that people in Africa cannot afford a condom? That is a load of Bull as one of the main ways that AIDS is spreading through Africa is through sex with prostitutes. If the guy can afford to buy a prostitute, he can also afford to buy a condom. Perhaps the UN does not want to educate the Africans to the point that they could be that self-reliant not to mention being RESPONSIBLE adults.

The situation is made even worse by the UN giving away condoms all over Africa. They have destroyed the commercial condom market leaving Africans no alternative source of condoms. Then again, if you do not bother to teach people why they should be wearing these things, they are not going to need one anyway. - 29 Aug 2005
Maybe the prostitutes should price in the cost for a condom. You know why they can't, because the truck drivers will instead visit the prostitutes who will let them have sex without condoms. This all goes back to education or in the case of Africa, the lack of education. Now comes our new President:
President-elect Barack Obama will reverse U.S. family planning and AIDS prevention strategies that have long linked global funding to anti-abortion and abstinence education, a public-health adviser said. - Bloomberg
So Obama is all for showering Africa with US-funded condoms. Maybe these should have the US Flag and 'A Gift from the People of the United States' printed on them like the other donated goods we shower on Africa.

Amazingly, the story notes success in Bush's program:
The emphasis on abstinence and fidelity, ``has been shown to have demonstrable success in Africa,'' said Valerie Huber, executive director of the National Abstinence Education Association in Washington. ``It would be more than unfortunate if that policy was changed.''

Both Republicans and Democrats have indicated support for the focus on abstinence and education that goes along with PEPFAR, which has also been shown to reduce the spread of HIV in countries such as Uganda, Huber said.

``If the president-elect wants to be science-based in foreign sex-education policies, it would be wisest to continue this way because it's shown to be effective,'' she said. - Bloomberg
Giving away condons to Africa is not going to make the African AIDS problem go away. Look at Washington, DC. Its AIDS rate would be the third-highest in the world, if it was its own country. As I noted a couple years ago:
One suggested way of combating this epidemic in Washington, DC is to distribute free condoms like they do in Africa. However, in Africa, the issue for many is one of access and the ability to afford condoms, as well as being an education issue. This would not be the case for those living in Washington, DC. They are just being lazy, careless or just don't care. But if people living in DC are too lazy to buy a condom, what makes anyone think that they will not be lazy enough to use one? Or maybe, not using condoms is just another part of black culture? - 4 May 2006
Well, in addition to a shortage of global donor money, there is also a shortage of peacekeepers. One Finnish news editorial suggested that Finnish peacekeepers be replaced with condoms. Has anyone in Africa contacted them yet about the offer?

Note: Personally, I am in favor of condoms. What I am against is subsidizing the whole world's condom supply. What next? How about some cheap booze so that these guys get more opportunities to use these condoms? It seems that there is no line drawn when it comes to helping people avoid any sort of responsibility. How is it that so many people can find money to buy what they want (liquor, prostitutes, mobile phones, expensive shoes, etc...) and then scream poverty when they need to pay for other stuff. Enough. Maybe the answer is less aid and not more. Take this economics expert from Kenya:

SPIEGEL: Mr. Shikwati, the G8 summit at Gleneagles is about to beef up the development aid for Africa...

Shikwati: ... for God's sake, please just stop.

SPIEGEL: Stop? The industrialized nations of the West want to eliminate hunger and poverty.

Shikwati: Such intentions have been damaging our continent for the past 40 years. If the industrial nations really want to help the Africans, they should finally terminate this awful aid. The countries that have collected the most development aid are also the ones that are in the worst shape. Despite the billions that have poured in to Africa, the continent remains poor. - Spiegel
Government Aid can be a good thing, if used properly. The aid going to Africa is not helping. Maybe it should just be given directly to the people to decide on their own what it is that they need. However, I think it best if we just stop. Let the Africans help themselves.

Black Culture Update

There are many truths on this planet that are not nice to hear about. Often it is easier to simply accept the excuses provided. Back in May I wrote about problems in the black community in "Is Black Culture behind the DC AIDS Epidemic?" where I connected black culture to Washington, DC's AIDS epidemic, which is the highest in the US and is one of the highest in the World. A relevant part of the damaging culture being the idiotic and suicidal 'Stop Snitching' movement.

'Stop snitching' does not seem to bother the black community, nor does it seem do murders. No, the black community is busy chasing after people who try and point out the basic problems of the black community, like the cartoonist who drew this cartoon"

Here is the reaction of the Jacksonville Leadership Coalition to the cartoon:
racist, culturally insensitive and degrading to African-American women. - News 4 Jax
This is their concern? What about the friggin dead guy? What about the murderer and his 'stop snitching' BS who is the real problem? What kind of future is this little girl going to have in an environment like this?

How much of a problem is the stop snitching movement? Huge:
Those rules are making it much harder for the police to catch killers, according to Professor David Kennedy of The John Jay College of Criminal Justice.

Kennedy works with communities and police departments all over the country. Nationwide, he says, police are able to arrest a suspect in about 60 percent of the homicide cases they investigate. That’s known as the "clearance rate."

But Kennedy says in some neighborhoods the rate is much, much lower. "I work in communities where the clearance rate for homicides has gone into single digits."

The unwillingness to come forward, Kennedy says, lies at the core of the problem. - 60 Minutes
I wonder, are the community 'leaders' so pissed off not because of the name calling, but because of the attention that it brings to the real problems that they are refusing to address.

Oddly enough, Blacks are already overrepresented in the prison population. Just imagine how many blacks would be in prison if the stop snitching movement was not protecting criminals from arrest. Then again, if they knew that they were going to get caught, then maybe they wouldn't commit the crime in the first place.

That however will not be the case as long as BS like this continues to happen.

And until black communities decide that criminals are not going to define their community, they will never tackle their AIDS and crime problems. Problems of their own making.

Sure the cartoon was disrespectful. But, it is only documenting the total lack of respect in the black community for others and for the law.

Finnish Editorial: Replace Finnish Peacekeepers with Free Condoms

It is no secret that Finland is a very liberal country. While in some respects it is very much on the cutting edge of technology and has a high standard of living, it is also politically, very much aligned with the thinking of 'Old Europe'. This is combined with their declared stance of being 'neutral'; A product of sharing a border with the Soviet Union. (As long as their neutral position did no piss off the Soviets.)

Despite this position of neutrality, there has been an ongoing discussion about the possibility of joining NATO and a commitment to retain their massive stockpile of landmines despite the rest of the EU signing the Landmine ban treaty and pressures by EU States, and the rest of the world, for them to do the same. They also have a leading role concerning Kosovo and peacekeepers in Afghanistan.

The issue at the moment is whether Finland should increase its presence in Afghanistan.

There is concern that Finland is overextending itself militarily, partly in issues that some believe do not concern Finland, such as the War on Terror. There has already been a decision to withdraw their peacekeepers from Lebanon. Now some are pushing for the same to happen in Afghanistan. Take this commentary published online on Finland's leading newspaper titled "COMMENTARY: Send condoms, not rifles, to Afghanistan":

Finland also has a so-called good reputation around the world. Although Finland is in Afghanistan for legitimate reasons, the mission could damage this reputation.

War is rough; it is hell, as one of the best American generals, William Tecumseh Sherman (1820–1891) said.

Like any other soldier, a Finn is capable of shooting a prisoner of war, or raping a civilian. In a theatre of operations like Afghanistan, the likelihood of such an event is greater than in a traditional peacekeeping operation. [Note: Shooting someone, maybe yes, but not a prisoner. (Technically, there are no recognized prisoners of war, only illegal combatants.) Rape, no. Not for anything, she does not convey a very high opinion of Finnish peacekeepers. They are volunteers and are much better educated than those coming from countries that have been involved in rape issues.]

If this were to happen, the sad news would be remembered around the world for a long time. [Note: Not likely]

A different kind of hypothesis: what if a Finnish patrol were to stop a car in Afghanistan with Osama bin Laden in it? Would Finland hand bin Laden over to the Americans, incur the hatred of militant Muslims, and thus increase the likelihood of a terror attack in Finland? - Helsingin Sanomat

There you have it. Perfect reasoning from the 'left'. We need to get the hell out of Afghanistan because we might accidentally find Osama Bin Laden and that might piss off some radical muslims. (Note: Finnish Forces are not actively looking for him. That is not their mission.)

Well here is a secret for this reporter, if they want to hate you, they will find a reason to do so:

We spoke at some length with the Imam about the worldviews of the Muslim community in Finland. He believed that the views could be divided into three groups.

Firstly there are the Finnish converts who, despite having become Muslim by faith, remain ‘Finnish’ in all other ways, including knowing their rights as citizens.

The second group are immigrants who have escaped bad situations in their countries of birth and as a result feel a sense of gratitude to the country that has given them refuge.

The third group, which he believes to be the majority amongst Muslim immigrants across Europe, feel that it was the activities and policies of ‘the West’ that led to them having to leave their homeland – be that for economic reasons or non-economic reasons such as war. As a result, they feel that they owe no gratitude to the countries where they now live.

This sentiment will only be amplified if they face prejudice or a lack of opportunities once resident in Europe. Importantly, ‘the West’ is seen as a bloc – in many ways a mirror image of how the West tends to view “the Muslim World” in an undifferentiated way. Therefore Finland’s history as a young nation with a past of being a colony itself, makes no difference to it being seen as part of ‘the West’.

Two anecdotal stories Imam Chehab recounted to us suggest that if an individual already has a certain mindset – in this case that of Finland as part of the ‘oppressive West’ – then they will retrospectively find the ‘evidence’ to support this.

The first case concerned a TV documentary shown some years ago about the birth of Israel. One of the elderly Zionists who was interviewed noted that there had been a small number of Finns who had fought with them. Rather than dismissing these as probable mercenaries, adventurers or crackpots, the Imam remembered this was discussed by some as evidence that Finland was supportive of Israel and not sympathetic to the Palestinians.

Another similar anecdote was about a member of the congregation who showed the Imam an article he had discovered in an obscure history journal noting that during the 11th century Crusades, there was a Finnish regiment amongst the Christian armies which was reputed to be particularly blood-thirsty. This again was taken as indicative of Finnish attitudes to Islam a millennium later! Although individually these stories might seem almost comical, they do suggest a particular attitude amongst a few individuals who see Finland as no different from any other Western country.

At the very least they show a lack of understanding of Finnish history and society, again suggesting a failure of integration. Of course it will be only a few individuals who would justify their feelings against Finland in these obscure historical terms, but a failure of integration leading to marginalisation, unemployment, poverty and lack of educational opportunities will provide much more contemporary grounds for some to wish ill on the country. - FIIA Report, Pages 64-65

Her title for this article, 'Send Condoms' can in itself be seen as insulting Islam, as some Muslims believe that condoms encourage extramarital sex.

The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) has said help your brother and sister when they are right or wrong. The companions asked, “How to help them when they are wrong.” He said “to stop them from doing wrong is their help.” So are you doing this by giving them condoms?

If I were you, I will teach why they should not engage in premarital or extra marital sex. They can always get condom some where else. Your job as Muslim to tell what is Allah’s ruling on this so that they can make good decisions for themselves. - Islam Online

Does she really think handing out condoms to Muslims is going to piss Muslims off less?

As far as this imam quoted above is concerned, handing out condoms is wrong, unless there is a medical reason for the woman to need it. Not getting pregnant is not a valid reason. So even something trivial and beneficial can get Finland in trouble.

What kind of aid workers does she propose sending? If she wants to help women then women need to be sent. However, even that can cause problems, because local men might think that not dressing in a burqa might be seen as interfering in their culture. And how do you protect these female aid workers? If you send men, then you open up the rape issue again (her reason), especially considering that aid workers get much closer access to the locals than peacekeepers.

There is also the basic problem in that Finnish society itself is in some ways offensive to Islam. Women are treated as equals to men. Women can travel without the supervision of a male relative and women can legally drink alcohol from the age of 18. Since there are Muslims living in Finland, there is the possibility that they will complain to their 'brothers' abroad about how they are being in Finland, risking Finland to attack just as much as having peacekeepers abroad.

So unless Finland plans to just surrender to the muslims, then this thinking is at the least just plan foolish and at most, dangerous.

Peacekeepers are needed in Afghanistan, simply because there are terrorists in the country who are determined to disrupt all attempts to develop the country's infrastructure whether they are run by foreigners of not. Foreign peacekeepers are needed to stop, kill or capture these terrorists or at the very least, provide a stable environment for the new Government to grow so that it can handle these matters itself.

Finland can ignore many problems around the globe as long as all countries also do not ignore them. That is the case now, but that might not always be the case. Unfortunately, the writer did not fully consider the risks of not participating.

Is Black Culture behind the DC AIDS Epidemic?

By now everyone has probably heard about the 'Don't Snitch' culture that has taken control of many Black communities in the US mainly thanks to pro-crime rap music.

Last week, 60 Minutes covered this perverse culture of "Don't Snitch". This 'culture' in effect prevents the police from catching criminals, simply because there are no witnesses to any crimes, that is if anyone even bothers to report a crime. The problem is so great that in some places nine out of ten murders are going unsolved as witnesses and others who might have information about crimes refuse to come forward.
"Anybody who comes forward and talks to the police about something they witnessed, a murder or a crime, are they a snitch?" Cooper asks.

"Yes… It's a crime, remember, in our community, to snitch," says Tess. - 60 Minutes (Click the link to read the whole story on Don't Snitch.)
I moved out of DC because it has a huge crime problem. While there are all sorts of calls for more action to be done in high-crime areas, it is starting to appear that the crime problem in black communities has been bought and is owned by those who live there. This means that it is up to them to solve their crime problem, starting with returning to cooperating with police again. (One excuse I heard was that the police mistreat informants, but this excuse falls flat when you consider that tips can be called in anonymously.)

Now I wonder, is high crime the only result of this new development in Black Culture? Maybe 'don't snitch' is also one reason why Washington, DC has such a high AIDS infection rate? Any person would be hesitant to tell others that they have AIDS. That would be all the more likely in a culture of don't tell.

How bad is the AIDS epidemic in Washington DC?

Dr. Marsha Martin of the Washington, D.C. HIV/AIDS Administration said the city began a universal testing policy last June that has already paid off.

"We have the highest AIDS rate in the country -- 179 per 100,000 (population)" she said.

"Since June we have screened more than 16,000 individuals," Martin added. Of these, 580 have been positive, giving an infection rate of 3.5 percent -- far above the estimated U.S. national rate of between 0.8 percent and 1.2 percent. - Reuters

Highest in the country. Well that still can't be so bad, right?

We really need to get people thinking about HIV more," he said. "People don’t really think about it all that much. If Washington, D.C., were its own country, it would have the third-highest rate of HIV in the world, but you never hear about that." - Bangor Daily News

That is bad, and like most bad things, Washington, DC seems to excel at being at the extreme end of a bad thing. They are estimating that 1 in 20 DC Residents might be infected with the AIDS virus.

1 in 20 is 5%. To put things in perspective, the HIV prevalence rate for all of Sub-Saharan Africa is 7.4%. Miami, Florida's hardest-hit city, has a rate of around 1%. - AIDS Combat Zone

Then there is the problem of unwed/single mothers. Don't snitch fits nicely here. Really, if you are going to give murders, drug dealers and robbers a free pass, why pick on men for getting women pregnant and then ditching them with their child.

Now all these issues can be examined in all sorts of ways. So how about investigating how the community itself might be responsible for its problems and social issues. Then perhaps the problems can be tackled. But for that to happen, people are going to have to look to school to get their education instead of a rap song.

UN Blames US for African Condom Shortage!

"There is no doubt in my mind that the condom crisis in Uganda is being driven by (U.S. programs)... To impose a dogma-driven policy that is fundamentally flawed is doing damage to Africa." - Stephen Lewis, the UN Secretary General's special envoy for HIV/AIDS in Africa

The fact that the US wants and ABC approach in combatting AIDS in Africa is no secret. As a refresher, ABC stands for:

  • Abstain
  • Be Faithful
  • Use Condoms

For some reason the UN and the anti-AIDS committe have always had a problem with the ABC approach. They only want two things; money and the right to break drug patents. With the money they want to buy condoms and manufacture cheap drugs to maintain those who already have AIDS.

This approach will not stop the spread of AIDS in Africa.

Concerned that people in Africa cannot affort a condom?

In addition the the ABC approach to fighting AIDS, the US has put another restriction on donations:

The United States contribution to the Global Fund is subject to certain U.S. legislative restrictions, including that, during 2004-2008, no U.S. government contribution may cause the total amount of U.S. government funds contributed to exceed 33% of total contributions.

You can look at the list of who is giving what here.

Some notable contributors:

  • Gates Foundation $150 Million total
  • Int'l Olympic Committee $100,000
  • Mr. Kofi Annan $100,000
  • Saudi Arabia $10 Million
  • New Zealand $2.1 Million
  • Kuwait $1 Million
  • Greece $302,000
  • Canada $210 Million (Mr. Lewis is from Canada)
  • Iceland $206,299
  • South Korea $500,000
  • Liechtenstein $177,190
  • Mexico $100,000
  • Poland $30,000
  • Also:
  • India $0
  • Iran $0
  • North Korea $0
  • George Soros $0

This is such a non-story. The shortage is taking place in Uganda. what does the Ugandan Government have to say about this national crisis:

"It is not true that there is a condom shortage... There seems to be a co-ordinated smear campaign by those who do not want to use any other alternative simultaneously with condoms against AIDS." - Health Minister Jim Muhwezi of Uganda.

So the health Minister of Uganda, a country the UN is trying to help by calling attention to their crisis, is calling this for what it is, Pure Politics. Worse, it appears that the UN is attempting to userp a national government. Even if Uganda is short of condoms, it is up to them to say that there is a shortage. Lets also try to think that it is their responsibility to provide for thier people, not the UN.

With all of this in mind, I have a suggestion for Mr. Lewis. How about clicking on the link below. It turns out that they sell condoms in bulk. Need some money? How about asking your fellow UN Diplomats to stop getting parking tickets and contribute those funds towards buying condoms. After all, the US is doing its fair share in this crisis. Let some other country buy the condoms. Aren't we all suppossed to working together in this fight? Where is the rest of the team?

Sweden is giving almost $128 Million. Wouldn't it be fitting to use their donation to buy the condoms?
