"The economy will recover faster if workers are willing to seek out and seize distant opportunities"

I have said this before. People should look at moving to where the work is:
Barack Obama has been caught spouting some of his socialist thoughts. Too bad he is close to the right idea, he just has it backwards. Instead of calling to redistribute wealth to the poor, the poor should be encouraged to move to where the jobs and money are today.

Don't Redistribute wealth. Redistribute the poor.

Think about it. Businesses and their related jobs move all the time. Sure, some go away due to advances in technology and others move out of the country entirely. Still, the United States has more manufacturing jobs than any other country on the planet, including China. (There were reports that China will overtake the US in 2009, but I doubt that now that the credit crisis has struck China.)

The poor are to a degree the victims of local government. Local governments fail to keep businesses, but they manage to keep many local residents from moving away, mainly with promises, handouts and programs such as rent stabilization and rent control.

and

Even better is using the money to help people move to where the jobs are. And there are many jobs out there. Look at all the immigration raids where they detain hundreds of illegal aliens at a single factory. The poor can relocate to take those jobs.

One group sure to oppose this suggestion is the Democrat politicians. By keeping the poor where they are, they have trapped a very reliable voting block and allowing them to move will put their own careers, and reason for wasteful socialist spending programs at risk.

The rest of us move around the country for work all the time. Migration of the workforce is one reason why the US traditionally has a low unemployment rate. As it states in the quote above, many Ohioans are 'voting with their feet' moving out of the state to greener pastures. The poor should be encouraged to move as well. This would not only help them escape a life of poverty, but would also help them escape high crime areas. That is something much better to assist them with, instead of trying to train them for work that does not exist in their part of the country anymore. - Don't Redistribute wealth. Redistribute the poor
Imagine my surprise when I heard a confirmation of my comments on NPR's Marketplace Morning report on my drive in to work:
Staying busy and socially active is crucial. But nothing compares to quickly getting back to work. Of course, that's easier said than done in this economy. And the best advice for many may be the hardest to swallow: pull up roots and move to where the jobs are.

If you're near a city with lots of opportunity, it can make sense to stay put and search locally for something new. But when the one big employer in your small town shuts down, it's easy to fall into the trap of waiting for something to come around the bend -- of hoping your congressman will wrangle stimulus money for your hometown's shovel-ready salvation. But the longer you wait for a job to come to you, the worse the sting of unemployment can get.

Demographers say Americans are more rooted, less mobile than ever -- despite conventional wisdom. But the economy will recover faster if workers are willing to seek out and seize distant opportunities. And despite the pain of relocation, many of the unemployed will recover lost happiness quicker if they recover a little of that lost spirit of American mobility. Jobward, ho! - Marketplace Org
Eventually, people are going to have to move to where the work is or they will become ever more dependent on Government aid. There is work out there, but it seems that much of it is in areas of the country that people will have to move to, to get those jobs.

And there are jobs out there. Look at all the illegal alien raids at factories in the south and in the west. Factories are hiring thousands of illegal aliens, not because they are cheaper, but because there are no legal aliens in the area to take all the positions. Unfortunately, you are not going to see any Democrats suggesting or even attempting to assist unemployed people move to where the jobs are. This is a shame and this is one reason why you have all the problems that you have in inner cities with high unemployment and crime. The jobs moved away but the people who did those jobs did not. That would have been OK if the jobs were replaced, but they were not. They were replaced with Government aid. (See my posts "Don't Redistribute wealth. Redistribute the poor" and "Don't Redistribute the Wealth - Redistribute the Work!" for more on that.)

Senator Schumer on Theft: “The American people really don’t care”

Just got back from spending the day at the hospital to this fine example of why our leaders suck:

-----

-----
“The American people really don’t care” - Senator Chuck Schumer on Government waste through pork projects
I am so glad to hear that Senator. Nice of you to stick your hands in my pockets and help yourself. Why not just take it all?!?!?!?!?!?

The Senator does point out one big issue for the Democrats. These guys are counting on the rest of us to not care. For the longest time they have gotten away with it, especially considering that the majority of people who do vote for the Democrats are net recipients and not net payers. But it does come at a price. For every $1 billion in what Senator Schumer admits is 'Porky Amendments' costs each American over $3. That is no big deal right? It is only $3, but they go and take that much from everyone. So for a family of 4, that comes out to over $13.

Take Ex-Governor Blagojevich's $2 Billion Earmark for an outdated/obsolete carbon energy plant that is apparently going to come back to life through the 'stimulus' bill, after being canceled by the Government as waste. This project alone will cost a family of four $26.

The $800 Billion 'stimulus' bill will cost each American about $2,700. That is over $10,000 for a family of four. And since half of Americans are paying no income tax, the price tag is much higher for the half of the population that is paying taxes. How much of this is for pet projects, payoffs and waste? Keep in mind that this is your cost for just this one spending bill! Congress tosses in crap pork projects in many bills that they pass.

When is America going to figure out that none of this spending is being done for their benefit?

And finally, I would like the Republican members of Congress to ask their three fellow Senators to re-think whether or not it is a good idea to vote against all their fellow Republicans for this sham of a 'stimulus' bill. They are selling the rest of us out almost more so than the Democrats, since they are the ones with the power to kill this bill. And all of the Republicans in Congress should be held partly responsible for the actions of Republicans Collins, Spectre and Snowe.

Marion Barry Should Die in Jail

I last wrote about Marion Barry's allergy to filing tax returns in "Marion Barry has failed to file a Tax Return since 1998" This was posted in October, 2005.

Now this shining example of the types of tax cheats you can find in the Democrat Party has once again made it into the news for failing to file his tax return for the eighth time in nine years!
For the second time in two years, frustrated federal prosecutors took aim at Marion Barry's chronic failure to file his tax returns and urged a judge to put him in jail.

The move by authorities is the latest act in a long-running tug of war between authorities and the D.C. Council member over his tax status. In all, prosecutors say, Barry has failed to file his returns on time in eight of the past nine years. - Washington Post (Go read it all as the whole damn story on his behavior is just plain unbelievable)
Do you hear it? This is Marion Barry going F-You to all of us and the 'System'. This guy is the poster child for what is wrong with Washington, DC. He does not respect the law. He even flaunts that he defies the law. He does or at least did have a huge drug problem. Think of that, the Mayor of the Capital City of the United States a damn drug user/abuser. This is a guy who has also gotten so many free passes that he would probably have to live another 100 years to serve all the jail time that he would have earned if his crimes were taken seriously. Not for anything, but this guy should finally be made an example of. All he does is waste our time and damages the potential of inner city DC children who learn that this is the type of person who they should look up to as a hero. That is just messed up.

Jailing Marion Barry will do more good for Washington, DC than billions of dollars in stimulus!

If they decide against sending him to jail, he should run for Congress, or apply for a position in Obama's Cabinet. Looking at the clowns we currently have serving, this guy is qualified enough for two positions!

Senate 'Stimulus' Bill Still Contains $2 Billion Blagojevich Earmark!

National Review posted about this $2 Billion earmark for a project that the Government itself shut down as it turned into a waste a money over time. Shutting the project down was good business, especially considering that the technology it planned to prove was made obsolete by better, and cheaper technology.
It became clear the Department of Energy could not, in good conscience, continue to support the program. The likelihood that it would fail, leaving the American people with hundreds of millions of dollars in sunk cost and none of the benefits, is not acceptable. - Then Secretary of Energy, Samuel W. Bodman, via the National Review
Bad Government is when politicians take a project like this that was shuttered as a bad idea, and force the Government to do it anyway. Worse, Congress is doing this on behalf of a disgraced/criminal politician.
After FutureGen was abandoned, disgraced Illinois Governor Rod Blagojevich paid Cassidy and Associates, a major Washington, D.C. lobbying firm, $468,000 in public funds to lobby to restart the project. The Illinois delegation in Congress has also been pushing hard for the FutureGen earmark, despite the fact that the Obama administration has been vocal about their opposition to earmarks in the stimulus, and has even specifically said they are opposed to including funding for FutureGen in the bill.

The Wall Street Journal estimates that the FutureGen would generate about 2,675 new jobs—and only 150 of those are permanent. Congress would be spending just shy of $750,000 per new job. - The National Review
Those Senate Republicans who are planning to vote for this bill, should think again because they are approving $2 Billion in Government waste on this one item alone. What kind of line item review did this get? What kind of payoff did these two/three Republican Senators get to keep this item in the bill? Hell, even the President is against funding this project, and yet, there it is in the 'Compromise' Senate Bill.
10 FOSSIL ENERGY RESEARCH AND DEVELOPMENT

For an additional amount for ‘‘Fossil Energy Re12 search and Development’’, $4,600,000,000, to remain available until September 30, 2010: Provided, That $2,000,000,000 is available for one or more near zero emissions powerplant(s): - Senate Comprimise Bill
The Stimulus is bad. Senators who vote for it should be held accountable for their vote, especially the Republicans who could have stopped this biggest Government bribe to socialists ever. It is a shame that the places of Government that should be filled with our best and brightest are instead filled with idiots, political 'players' and crooks.

"Stimulus" = $8 BILLION A SENATOR!

The problem with the Republican Party is that somehow there are Republicans in Congress who still think that it is OK to screw their Constituents as long as the other side treats them with 'respect'.

This is how you get news that a compromise has been reached with 1 or 2 Republican Senators/Traitors by cutting $100 billion out of the stimulus bill and ending up with an amount EXACTLY THE SAME AS WHAT THEY STARTED WITH because they added an extra $100 billion to the bill before they started cutting.

This is bad politics and we need to stop sending these ass clowns to Congress. It is these types of stupid games that got us the housing crisis that put us all in this mess in the first place.

In this case, each Senator is voting for $8 in wasteful spending. For years Congress was complaining about how expensive President Bush's War in Iraq was. Well at least in that case we got rid of Saddam Hussein and as a bonus installed a better Government in Iraq. In just the last years Congress blew more on that with trying to save the banks and now more on that again in this latest act of stupidity that even Congress's own budget office says is a bad idea.

Unfortunately, it is party our fault because we did not do enough to remove these people from Congress. We are going to have to do a better job at that!

MV FAINA Ransom Drop (Photo)

Seems that in the wake of the MV SIRIUS STAR ransom, dropping ransom money by parachute has caught on as the MV FAINA ransom also delivered by parachute. Although this time it appears that they split the ransom into two packages. Looks like the pirates might have had to do a little work and retrieve the packages.

Motor Vessel Faina Released – Pirates Leave the Ship

090204-N-3931M-427 OFF THE COAST OF SOMALIA (Feb. 4, 2009) - Ransom money is dropped in the vicinity of the MV Faina off the coast of Somalia near Hobyo while under observation by a U.S. Navy ship. Pirates did not actually leave the ship until Feb. 5, more than 24 hours after this photo was taken. The Belize-flagged cargo ship is operated by "Kaalbye Shipping Ukraine" and is carrying a cargo of Ukranian T-72 tanks and related equipment. The ship was attacked Sept. 25, 2008 by pirates and forced to proceed to anchorage off the Somali Coast. (U.S. Navy photo by Mass Communications Specialist 1st Class Michael R. The US Navy did go to assist the ship's crew once the pirates left the ship behind and probably got a good look at the cargo once onboard.

Somali pirates released the Motor Vessel Faina Feb. 5, after holding it for more than four months. The U.S. Navy has remained within visual range of the ship and maintained a 24-hour, 7-days a week presence since it was captured. Visited My Senators Friday - No To Stimulus

So, there was a comment somewhere on one of the blogs I read noting that working people have no time to complain to Congress, that it's just those with lots of time on their hands who go and make big protests, demanding more socialism and making the Government change to meet their demands, in effect screwing the rest of us all while we are busy working.

That made sense to me so I decided to take the afternoon off and go visit My Congressmen. I took my daughter so I didn't have time enough to visit all three, so I figured it best to visit the offices of my two Senators since the Senate has yet to vote on the 'Stimulus' bill.

The Capital Policemen were really nice. They even gave my daughter a badge and made her a 'junior officer' for the day.

The first stop once inside the Senate office building was Senator Warner's Office. There was a very nice young lady there who listened to me provide a couple thoughts on the 'stimulus' bill for a couple minutes. When I was done giving my views on this whole 'crisis' I got a thank you from them and my daughter got some candy.

Next stop was the office of Senator Webb. While Warner was with a bunch of other Senators in the basement of one of the Senate office Buildings, Webb was in the adjoining Senate office building in an office that looked like an office you would expect to find a Senator in. As I walked in a member of staff was already talking on the phone with another constituent mentioning that the Senator didn't yet have a position on the bill as they were still working on it and that he was aware of the wasteful spending that is contained in the bill. I also gave my comments in that I too would like the see the Senator vote against the bill. As I was explaining my position she was typing furiously. I asked if she was getting this all down and she replied, yes. I then apologized for not be more concise. I didn't just say kill it, I offered some suggestions on betters stimulus options.

Did my dropping by accomplish anything? Maybe just a little. It is one thing to take a little time to call them. It is another thing to go and actually show up in the office. At least it seems that there are lots of people letting their Senators know that this bill is all the crap that nobody wants it to be:
WASHINGTON (CNN) -- The recent debate over the nearly $900 billion economic stimulus plan and revelations of tax problems by three Obama administration appointees have voters angrily jamming phone lines on Capitol Hill to air their frustrations to their elected representatives.

Their reactions are putting pressure on Congress and benefiting watchdog groups on both sides of the political aisle.

Capitol operators tell CNN Radio that phone lines have been jammed for the past two weeks, sometimes prompting busy signals.

A spokeswoman for Sen. Jim Webb, D-Virginia, said calls on the sweeping stimulus plan jumped from eight during all of January to hundreds a day now. - CNN
Serves Congress right for trying to shove such a large P.O.S. onto the Country. Congressmen and the President should have to defend this bill item by item. They won't, because they can't. I don't care as long as this bill dies.

UPDATE:
Also see 'Better way to Spend $825 Billion in the Name of Stimulus' where I point out that with this amount of money, we can hold a lottery, where there are 800,000 first prizes of $1 million each. That is how much money we are talking about!

Finnish Triple-Murderer Freed From Prison (AGAIN)

So, lets do this one more time, right. What could go wrong?
Life prisoner Nikita Fouganthine was granted conditional release from Riihimäki prison on Monday morning. The Supreme Court reversed a Helsinki Court of Appeal decision that would have kept Fouganthine behind bars.

In December 2007, the Helsinki Court of Appeal granted Fouganthine a conditional release. However the court revoked its decision in June 2008 after Fouganthine was found guilty of aggravated endangerment of traffic safety while on parole.

The Supreme Court said that while Fouganthine broke the law while on parole, his new offences warranted a milder punishment when compared to his original crime.

Fouganthine, formerly known as Juha Valjakkala, was handed a life sentence in 1988 for murdering three people in Sweden. - YLE News Finland

He was let out almost a year ago in February, 2008. He was only free a couple months before ending up back in jail. This guy has a history of getting into trouble and attempting to escape. Basically, getting a free pass every time. Lets not forget the reason why he was in jail:
Juha Veikko Valjakkala (born June 13, 1965) became a part of Finnish and Swedish crime history in 1988 when he was convicted of the murder of a family of three at a cemetery in the northern Swedish community of Ã…msele.

The series of events that led to the murders began when the 22-year-old Valjakkala was released from a prison in Turku on May 1, 1988, after which he started wandering through Sweden and Finland with his 21-year-old girlfriend Marita Routalammi.

On July 3 they arrived in Ã…msele. After nightfall Valjakkala stole a bicycle. He was pursued by Sten Nilsson and his 15-year-old son Fredrik. The chase ended at a cemetery where Sten and Fredrik Nilsson were both shot by Valjakkala with a shotgun. Later Sten's wife and Fredrik's mother, Ewa Nilsson, went looking for the two and was stabbed to death by Valjakkala outside the cemetery. Valjakkala and Routalammi were caught in Odense, Denmark just over a week later.

Valjakkala was given a life sentence on three counts of murder, while Routalammi got off with two years for complicity in assault and battery. Routalammi was released after serving half of her time, and Valjakkala was transferred to Finland to serve out the rest of his sentence.

In April 1994 Valjakkala fled the Riihimäki prison where he was being held. He took a teacher as a hostage, but he was apprehended nearby and the hostage escaped the situation unscathed. He has also tried to escape once in 1991. - Wiki
Releasing this guy from jail has brought others around him nothing but trouble. Worse, he basically gets no additional time for these crimes he commits while out because they are 'minor' compared to the reason why he is already in jail. What insanity, especially considering that the time for that original crime has been seen as served. (Life does not mean life over there.) So it should be seen as new time. Good luck getting liberals to accept that.

What trouble is he going to cause this time?

I am guess that he will be back in jail within four months. I would prefer he to end up back there before I travel to Finland next month!

Better way to Spend $825 Billion in the Name of Stimulus

I have already written my views on what I think of the sham Stimulus program here (See: Pelosi - Reid - Obama - Recession Extension Bill). Today, my father was trying to get a grasp on how much money was at stake here and wanted me to confirm that a billion is 1,000 million. Which got me thinking. Turns out when thinking in millions of dollars, the stimulus package totals $825,000 million dollars.

Now, add that with the Democrat comment that they can't promise that spending all this money will create any jobs. ZERO. This is what the Democrats call 'Stimulus'. I would call that lying and possibly even stealing. So, my position is still that none of it should be spent. However, I think I have a better plan on what to do with the money if it turns out that they do decide to spend it.

Lets have the US Government hold the world's richest lottery. The lottery will have 800,000 first prizes of $1 million each. The money would be given tax free and received in a lump sum. You would have to be an American Citizen to be entered. I would exclude people who have not paid their taxes, those in jail, those with open warrants for arrest and those who are convicted felons. (But these are all details that can be sorted out later. I am thinking 'big picture') But, each American is entered one time and can only win once. Both rich and poor would be qualified. That is how lotteries work.

I bet that this sort of stimulus program will create much more 'stimulation' of the economy than anything else Congress comes up with. Many will quit their jobs making opening for others. Some of this money will be spent, creating jobs in business. This would be great for the American automakers as many of these people will immediately go out and buy new cars. Then they will all need to purchase better housing. This is much better than what Nancy Pelosi and our President want to spend the money on.

To be clear, my plan is not guaranteed to create any jobs either. But, my plan creates eight hundred thousand new millionaires. That is something the Democrat plan can't promise either.

So what other better ideas are out there?
