Iran's Other Hostages II

Iran captured three more hostages over the weekend. This time they managed to capture three Finns who were out in the Gulf 'fishing'.

Iranian officials arrested three Finns working for Nokia Siemens Networks in the Persian Gulf on Saturday. Nokia Siemens confirmed the matter to Helsingin Sanomat on Wednesday morning.

"The men were fishing off Dubai when they were arrested", says the company's Head of Corporate Communications Barry French. He added that the men work in Dubai.

The Ministry for Foreign Affairs is working to secure the release of the men. "We suspect that they have accidentally drifted into Iranian waters near the island of Abu Musa", reported Foreign Ministry official Pasi Tuominen late on Tuesday to Helsingin Sanomat. - Helsingin Sanomat

This story will sound familiar to regular readers as it is similar to the case profiled in the first Other Hostages post from March. (Iran's Other Hostages) Getting too close to that very same island cost German Donald Klein 15 months in an Iranian jail, most likely because the Germans refused to release an Iranian Agent they had in their custody.

I am not aware of any issue the Iranian's might have with Finland. It could have just been a capture of opportunity. I am a bit surprised that they would end up in the same area known to have been a problem in the past. While the UAE claims the island, it is also claimed, and occupied, by Iran.

I have no idea how this is going to turn out. It will be interesting to see if the Iranian's opt to piss off the Finns as well by letting this drag on for a couple of weeks or months. (The fact that they work for Nokia Seamens is probably not going to help matters. Communications engineers can more easily be accused of spying. Not that Iran needs facts to back their accusations)

Update:
Seems the Iranians see no need to hold Finns hostage:

Iran is to free three Finnish men seized in the Persian Gulf on Saturday within 48 hours, the Finnish foreign ministry said Wednesday.

Pasi Tuominen, a legation counsellor at the ministry, told the Finnish News Agency (STT) that talks with Iranian officials indicated that the Finnish citizens would be released in two days' time. - Newsroom Finland

Could be that this was just some huge misunderstanding. Lets see if they get their boat back.

Update: 7 June
It appears that they have been released and are just waiting for the right opportunity to get off the island, to Tehran and then out of the country. This would indicate that the Iranians decided to keep their boat. More info here:

Iran releases Finnish businessmen - Helsingin Sanomat

Update: 8 June
The latest is that they are free to go once the weather clears, and they will be able to keep the boat. There is also this:

The men, who were stopped by the Iranians near the island of Abu Musa, had not informed Dubai officials about their planned fishing trip, although Salah says that it would have been advisable to do so.

In Dubai, all vessels carrying taking people on sight-seeing or fishing trips need to apply for permission from the Coast Guard before going out to sea. For private boaters it is enough for them to have a local driving licence or passport with them. - Helsingin Sanomat

French Warship Refused to Aid Hijacked Danish Ship DANICA WHITE

This is pathetic behavior for a country that is suppossed to be a world power:

SOMALI pirates hijacked a small Danish-flag general cargo ship last Saturday some 114 miles off the coast and sailed it towards Hobbio, north of Mogadishu, where there is now a small fleet of hijacked vessels.

According to reports a French warship arrived on the scene as the Danica White entered Somali waters but refused requests from the ship's manager, H Folmer, to intervene within territorial waters. - MGN

The French warship could have done something to keep the vessel from entering the harbor but chose not to, giving the weak excuse that it was not able to go into Somali territorial waters. Surely it can't be hard to get permission to do so, if not before than after the fact. After all, the US Navy is there shelling terrorists/shore pirates there and they don't seem to be having problems with the Somali Government. Whatever happened to 'hot pursuit'? What about a common decency to help your fellow man in trouble? Why was the warship there in the first place? My guess is they were busy taking pictures. Anyone who has been near the French Navy knows that they are good at that.
The ship is managed by H. Folmer & Co.

This is the same ship whose Captain was jailed by the US Coast Guard as profiled in Maritime Monday 50.
Scandinavian Shipping Gazette has an interview with an apologetic Captain Villy Larson, the Danish Captain of the DANICA WHITE, who ended up spending 104 days in jail from what appears to be no reason other than the US Coast Guard boarding officer being a jerk. (Note: FFI is highly Pro-Coast Guard!) Summary of the initial incident at Tim's Times.
This ship can't seem to get a good break.

I hope for their safe return.

While China is well-known for exporting most everything under the sun. However, they are also big importers, mostly of raw materials. But their definition of raw materials is pretty broad to include about 40 different grades of 'waste paper' (including one that permits up to 5% non-paper material) as well as garbage.

Of course, there is a limit to what they will accept, and Chinese Customs is tasked with ensuring that the imported material is acceptable.

It is amazing what you can find inside a shipping container.

After all, since you have the move the container anyway, why ship it back empty? Just lower the rate until you have shippers willing to stuff them.

Recruitment headache for Norway - OSLO - 30 May – Young Norwegians no longer want to go to sea, fewer of those already at sea plan to stay for long, and many who stayed are being lured into the offshore or non-maritime sectors. In the run-up to Nor-Shipping, Fairplay has heard from BW Gas, the Oslo-based LNG and LPG carrier specialist, that the intake of Norwegian cadets was reduced substantially some years ago after it had emerged that only 14% of the 1,000 cadets enlisted between 1990 and 2000 were still with the company at the turn of the millennium. Most had gone ashore or transferred to offshore where the pay is better and the breaks longer. Filling the gaps with citizens of non-European Economic Area countries would mean tackling issues such as work and residential permits plus cultural issues as well, says BW Gas chief executive Jan-Haakon Pettersen. Filling future senior-level vacancies will be a real problem in five years' time, he adds. Golden Ocean CEO Herman Billung admits he is worried by the dwindling number of Norwegians with sea experience available for work in the operations department. Meanwhile Utkilen CEO Geir Mjelde calls on companies themselves to tackle the issue of recruitment, not just leave it to the Norwegian Shipowners Association, which is doing a good job promoting the industry. Fairplay magazine publishes an in-depth assessment of Norwegian shipping in its 7 June issue. - Fairplay Homepage (Used with Permission)

Homeland Security Secretary Michael Chertoff Should Resign

Here is part of our illegal alien problem. Homeland Security Secretary Michael Chertoff has the wrong attitude for the job that he has been entrusted with:
Chertoff acknowledged there is "a fundamental unfairness" in legislation that permits illegal immigrants to remain in the United States but said trying to force them to leave would be impossible, USA Today reported.

"We are bowing to reality," Chertoff said.

He dismissed the position of some opponents who argue that illegal immigrants will leave if strict enforcement of U.S. laws makes it impossible for them to find a job.

"You're not going to replace 12 million people who are doing the work they're currently doing," Chertoff said. "If they don't leave, then you are going to give them silent amnesty. You're either going to let them stay or you're going to be hypocritical."

Chertoff warned there would be more mass roundups of illegal workers if the workers do not get a chance to become legal.

"We're going to enforce the law," he said. "People all around the country will be seeing teary-eyed children whose parents are going to be deported." - Washington Post
I am sure that Secretary Chertoff is a great guy, but he has clearly been corrupted by the scope of the problem.

His comments above are wrong in so many ways:
"trying to force them to leave would be impossible"
- How about stopping them from getting into the country in the first place?

- It is not like Homeland Security is really even bothering to try, so I don't know where he gets the idea that it is impossible. He has no real track record to back that statement up.

- If you take into account the number of captures of illegal aliens, over 1 million caught during last year, I would think that it is very possible to force them to leave, especially if you go after the employers to attract them and enlist the assistance of local police forces who are stumbling over illegal aliens all over the country.

- It will be impossible if you keep releasing illegal aliens whenever you run across them with nothing more than a meaningless appearance ticket.

- This is the attitude that has suspended a law prohibiting the use of Mexican Matricular Consular Identity card in the US. These are identity cards issued by Mexico that are so questionable that they are not an acceptable form of identification in Mexico or even for use entering Mexico, despite Mexico's claims that they are issued only to Mexican citizens.

- Immigration cannot now deal with the documentation for all the legal aliens, so eventually we will hear this if the bill becomes law: 'trying to do background checks and issue documentation for them is impossible.'

"We are bowing to reality,"
- The only reality is that not much is being done about this, other than talk of amnesty, which does nothing but attract more illegal aliens here hoping to make it under whatever deadline date Congress attaches to the amnesty.

- Imagine the police chief of a big city like DC 'bowing to the reality' of the high crime rate and telling the citizens that they need to accept a certain level of crime. Surely that chief's days would be numbered. (This is different from a community tolerating crime, such as in urban black areas where 'don't snitch' is the cool thing to do. That is more the result of failure to take a problem seriously over time, which is where we are at this moment with illegal immigration.)

- Really is that the current illegal alien problem was born out of the last amnesty that was offered to illegals.

"You're not going to replace 12 million people who are doing the work they're currently doing,"
- Sorry, but many of those jobs are simply going to disappear once you legalize the people doing them. Once the workers become legal, they will want to be paid-on-the-books. This will make it much more expensive for the employers who will now have to pay unemployment and social security as well as pay the workers more as a result of payroll deductions. In the end, employers will hire less people to compensate. This will also make other jobs economically unfeasible, and thousands of Americans will go back to mowing their own laws.

- According to Congressman Steve King, only 7 million of those twelve million illegals are working.

- The statement also does not take into account the demands that these 12 million illegal aliens place on our society. Forcing illegal aliens to leave will free up people authorized to work in the US to do other tasks. (As one of my child's former pediatricians said, 'they are a highs needs community'. Pregnant illegals and their children are guaranteed health care, thanks to the Emergency Medical Treatment and Active Labor Act, EMTALA. As it is, some 70% of children born at Dallas, Texas's Parkland Hospital have illegal aliens parents.) Demands on law enforcement, Government Services and the health system will probably greatly benefit from strict enforcement of immigration laws.

- Illegal Aliens provide artificially low labor costs. These low labor costs delay the adoption of new technologies that automate processes that the Illegals do now. This is true for many farm tasks.

"Chertoff warned there would be more mass roundups of illegal workers if the workers do not get a chance to become legal."
- Hello. This is your job. Ever think that the more of these illegal aliens you send back, the stronger the message is to not even attempt to come here?

"People all around the country will be seeing teary-eyed children whose parents are going to be deported."
- This is exactly what happens whenever a parent is arrested. Cleary Mr. Chertoff has too much of a heart for the position that he holds. Hell, even some terrorists are parents and some are even willing to use their children to carry out their terrorist acts.

- Well this would be the fault of the parents. They should be thankful that their children were rewarded with American Citizenship simply for being born here. Then there is the bonus that when the child turns 18, they can apply for their parents to come here legally. One way to reduce this type of illegal migration is to prohibit American Citizens from applying for their parents to become legal residents if they were in the country illegally when their child was born. I think this is a better solution than denying a child born in the US Citizenship.

Mr. Chertoff's statements have probably done no end of damage within the Department of Homeland Security. This is in addition to the damage done by this amnesty bill. After all, where is the incentive for a Border Agent to risk his life to catch illegal aliens when the news is out that they will probably be rewarded with legal status once here.

So he should step aside. Surely, there is someone available who has the attitude that it is possible to take control of our illegal immigration situation without rewriting the rules to make illegals, legal.

Chertoff says immigration bill "bows to reality" - Washington Post

Rep. Steve King: "The Voyage to Amnestistan (Amnesty) Aboard The Clipper Ship "America""

A press release from Congressman Steve King of Iowa concerning the Illegal Alien Amnesty Bill currently stinking up the halls of Congress.

This is one Congressman who understands that this is bad for America:
For Immediate Release

Illegal Immigrants:

Stowaways on the U.S.S. America

The Voyage to Amnestistan Aboard The Clipper Ship "America"

This giant American economy is like an enormous clipper ship with passengers and crew numbering some 300 million. We are the fastest sailing ship on the high seas, tempest-tossed by gusts and gales, clipping our way through the swells and spray. The crew of the "U.S.S. America", 144 million strong, trims the sails, swabs the deck, cooks in the galley, cares for the sick, bails the bilge, and steers the course. The passengers number 156 million, including the retired who have had their turn at the oars, the children who will get their turn, the unemployed who want their turn, and welfare recipients who are unenthusiastic about taking their turn. But the largest untapped group by far are the 70 million working age passengers who are simply not in the workforce. They occupy a cabin or bunk in first class or steerage, depending upon their means. Then there are the stowaways- illegal immigrants-totaling some12-20 million. We do know that not all stowaways are working as crew. Five of twelve stowaways are passengers in steerage. Only seven of twelve are swabbing the deck or trimming the sails of "America".

The Open Borders Lobby (OBL) wants Americans to believe our economy would collapse without cheap labor, legal or illegal, and that we must import more by the tens of millions. Theirs is a selfish and shortsighted attempt to expand their power at the expense of our nation's sovereignty. If they succeed in granting amnesty to illegal aliens, they will sink this nation, the giant clipper ship "America".

Two decades have passed since the 1986 amnesty "to end all amnesties". Congress passed, and President Reagan signed, the Immigration Reform and Control Act, which was intended to put an end to open borders by giving amnesty to a million people who were in the United States illegally. At the time, I was appalled that Congress and the President could so flagrantly discount the Rule of Law, that they would pardon a million lawbreakers and reward them with the very objective of their crimes. A million people rewarded for breaking the law!

Years later, we learned the one million illegal aliens, intended to be pardoned by the "amnesty to end all amnesties," quickly became three million. The 300% increase was the result of fraud, accelerated by a counterfeit document industry which immediately sprung up to meet the new demand. Today, there are probably more than 20 million illegal aliens in the United States. That number might have been less than a million if the most essential pillar of American Exceptionalism, the Rule of Law, had been respected and protected from 1986 through today.

Still, with a straight face, we debate granting amnesty to the 12-20 million illegals as if amnesty for tens of millions of lawbreakers was a simple business transaction. A pardon for tens of millions of lawbreakers is not the equivalent of a friendly corporate acquisition of another company. It is a corporate raid on the American people. The stakes are high because America is much, much more than a sanctuary for pirate companies who lure stowaways, and broker the profits from their labor at the expense of the Rule of Law. Then, they pass the billions in added social costs of their cheap labor on to the taxpayer. America may have become a welfare state since Lyndon Johnson's "Great Society" was launched, but we have no obligation to issue a paid-up debit card the benefits of citizenship to anyone who was able to sneak into our country. It is not as though they are Katrina survivors with a claim to prior contributions to the system.

Today, the scene on the bridge of "U.S.S. America" is the ship's elected senior officers - Congress - debating a recommendation from the captain - President Bush - that "America" needs more crew to take care of the growing number of retiring passengers. The captain and his OBL ensigns argue that "America" should sail off the constitutionally charted Rule of Law course, to take on "willing crewmen" from the foreign country of "Amnestistan".

The captain argues that trimming sails, bailing, and swabbing is something 70 million working age "America" passengers cannot or will not do. Regardless, they say, we have 12, perhaps 20, million "undocumented passengers and crew"(stowaways) who would refuse to get off the boat at the next dock if we ask them to. But the captain and the OBL ensigns have made it clear they will not order them off the ship even though 90% of the illegal drugs abused on board were smuggled from "Amnestistan". They will not order them off even though 28% of court-martial convictions are stowaways. They will not order them off "America" even though the 7% who are stowaways produce only 2.2% of the work. The Rule of Law officers need recruit only one in ten working age passengers to replace all of the 7 million working stowaways. Instead, the captain and OBL officers want to issue an all inclusive ticket to every stowaway - except those in the brig - so they can eat in the mess hall along side the paying passengers or with the documented crew.

Having charted a proper course, the Rule of Law officers argue the sum total of strength, vitality, and stability of "America" is directly proportional to the average individual productivity of the crew and the passengers. These officers also argue the free market design of "America" requires a higher ratio of crew to passenger and high productivity from each crew member in order to guarantee a far more seaworthy vessel. The only way to increase the capacity of the ship and to ensure safe passage for the stakeholders is to increase the average productivity of everyone on board. Taking on too many passengers or unskilled crew will slow and eventually sink "America". But none of these facts have been enough to sway the captain and OBL ensigns, some of whom maintain a good side business smuggling stowaways onto the ship.

If we simply enforce our current laws, millions of stowaways, both those working and those along for the ride, will voluntarily disembark at the next port of entry. Their departure would immediately reduce the burden on the ship's supplies and crew. Conversely, those Americans who are now riding along as passengers, but who join the crew, will provide a two-for-one benefit to all 300 million. By making the switch from passenger to crew, they will lift the burden off those who are carrying them and help shoulder the load of the millions who would still be passengers.

"America" has pulled into port at Amnestistan six times since the "amnesty to end all amnesties". Each time Congress punched a ticket for the stowaways who were overlooked in 1986 or who qualified due to misfortune. This time the captain and the OBL crowd mean to forever sail off course of the Rule of Law, taking aboard every willing traveler. This time their experiment will be at least 20 times greater in number than ever amnestied before. This time it will truly be an "Amnesty to End All Amnesties". Because this time, if the Open Borders Lobby wins the debate on the bridge, they will sink "America" to the deep, dark, depths of the third world, on the shoals of Amnestistan.
Very nice using the ship analogy.

To put the issue of illegal aliens in perspective, keep in mind that foreign seafarers who arrive on ships calling United States ports are treated like criminals. Most are required to have a visa just to take a couple hours of shore leave, even to visit a post office, get a haircut, or take a walk around the neighborhood. Neighborhoods full of illegal aliens.

Better yet, if amnesty is granted, then ports will be able to hire these illegal aliens to post guard on the ships to ensure that the sailors don't sneak ashore.

Gingrich 2008

Newt Gingrich claims to be considering a run for President in 2008. I have one suggestion for him, and the other Republican Candidates who are looking for the Conservative vote;
The path to the White House does not include stabbing the current President in the back. Leave that to the Democrats.
At issue is an interview Mr. Gingrich made recently to the New Yorker Magazine where he was highly critical of the President, including blaming him for the poor showing Republicans made in the mid-term Congressional Elections.

It is not President Bush's fault that Congressional Candidates did poorly in the 2006 Elections. It was their own poor behavior that is responsible for Democrats being in control of Congress at the moment. (That is, if you can say that they are in control.)

As a number of people has said, the Republicans deserved to lose Congress. It is only that the Democrats did not deserve to win it. It was their fear of losing that drove them to act irrational, abandoning the President, and their core agenda, which resulted in their loss. How ironic.

Mr. Gingrich's comments are unfortunate as I had been interested in seeing him enter the race, almost as much as Fred Thompson. (Thinking of the Thompson - Gingrich possibility.) I am not so sure any longer. At the very least, this is not a good way to kick things off.

Funny thing is, many of those who hate President Bush, hate Gingrich almost as much.

Panama Coast Guard Arrested for Stealing Seized Cocaine

This is the type of story that fits with many people's impression of Panama.
Panama detains ex-Coast Guard chief - PANAMA CITY 29 May – Panama has arrested Ricardo Traad, former head of the country’s coast guard agency the National Maritime Service (NMS), and Edilberto Luna, current NMS chief of operations, for money-laundering. Traad and Luna, detained on Saturday, are accused of taking a tonne of cocaine from a Panamanian-flagged general cargo ship, which was arrested in January 2006. - Lloydslist (Subscription)
The cocaine was found by the US Coast Guard and the vessel was then turned over to Panama. I suspect because it was Panamanian-Flagged. Not only was the cocaine missing, so was some of the legitimate cargo.
A ton of cocaine was confiscated during the operation, but another ton, which crew members said was hidden, was never found, nor were the 1,000 tons of scraps the ship was carrying. - Prensa Latina
Who arranged the unloaded of the cargo? You might be able to walk down the gangway with a suitcase full of coke, but you are going to have to make an extra effort to walk off with a ton of it. Perhaps the theft of the regular cargo was merely a way of concealing the theft of the cocaine.

How did these two officials know that there was more cocaine on the ship? I doubt these two would have taken it had the crew told them as surely the crew would tell everybody who interrogated them had they bothered to tell anyone. Did they just have a very successful scavenger hunt? Do they have a connection to the vessel in question or do they have connections to the drug couriers who tipped them off to the additional drugs onboard?

It is great that they have been caught. Since this is highly embarrassing to the Panamanians, I suspect that these two will eventually receive long prison sentences.

I imagine that this would make a great movie, provided the true story ever comes out.

"The message could not be delivered because the recipient's mailbox is full"

Oh, the problems of IT professionals everywhere. Nothing is their fault. It is always the fault of those inconsiderate fingers touching their equipment and sending emails with viruses or even the fault of some anonymous service provider. Now, I would think that storage is cheap. That is what everyone, including IT types keep telling me. That is, as long as your not using it to store email:
The message could not be delivered because the recipient's mailbox is full.
This is the most annoying message that I have been receiving lately.

Answering my email is truly frustrating already. The last thing I need to deal with is whether or not someone has received the message that I am sending to them. So I have taken the approach that the message has been dealt with, despite the annoying message telling me otherwise, and upon follow-up by the concerned party, complaining that they are still waiting for a reply from me, I can then resend the message. (Often the messages are sent to others, which in itself clogs up way too many email boxes.)

Now that I see what they are up to, I better understand why they are so eager to get my mailbox under 2 gigs. This is so that they can cap me as well. There is no way that I am going to let them do that now. Hopefully these caps prevent people from sending emails as well. I get too many as it is.

Red Sea crackdown hits pilgrims - JEDDAH - 23 May – Saudi Arabia and Egypt have launched a crackdown on Red Sea ferries that fail to comply with international safety standards. Lack of coherence to safety standards was the cause of the Al Salam Boccaccio 98 tragedy in February 2006, say Saudi port authority officials quoted in Arab News. The move comes as the Haj and Umrah pilgrims plan their journeys from Egypt to the Kingdom; since the sinking the number of pilgrims crossing has fallen by 40%, said an employee of one of the transport companies. Some pilgrims have switched to flying instead, or have dropped travel plans because of the price difference. Some new vessels have been brought in to carry Red Sea pilgrims, including the Honduras-registered former Finnish ferry Jamaa II, which can accommodate 960 passengers. But travel companies say these are not enough, suggesting that 20 vessels are needed to serve the Jeddah-Safaga route alone. - Fairplay Homepage (Used with Permission)

Memorial Day 2007 - Remember

This Monday is Memorial Day.
Memorial Day is a United States federal holiday that is observed on the last Monday of May. It was formerly known as Decoration Day. This holiday commemorates U.S. men and women who have died in military service to their country. It began first to honor Union soldiers who died during the American Civil War. After World War I, it expanded to include those who died in any war or military action. - Wikipedia
Take a moment to remember all the veterans who have died while protecting and preserving the United States of America.

(My daughter - Arlington Cemetery - Memorial Day 2006)

Larry Thorne is one who died while serving the United States. Major Thorne was an American who immigrated from Finland after World War II. He is famous for "fighting communism under three Flags"; as a soldier for Nazi Germany, Finland and finally for the US in Vietnam. His remains were recovered in Laos in 1999 and was buried in Arlington Cemetery in 2003.
In the book The Green Berets by Robin Moore, the main character was based on Larry Thorne. The book was later made into a movie by the same name starring John Wayne. - Wikipedia
Arlington Cemetery is full of countless other heroes whose stories will never be told.

(Rear Admiral Onni Lattu. Another Finnish-American buried in Arlington Cemetery.)

Not all of their bodies made it back to the US. Over 93,000 remained buried around the world in American Cemeteries. Many others went down with their ships and planes.

There are those among us who would prefer that we as a country do nothing to remember the past. These are the same people who would prefer to discard honor and traditions that have been built over the centuries as this country has grown and developed. However, it is this honor, traditions and way of life that makes America what it is and instills a desire in all sorts of American Citizens and Residents to protect our country.

Mexico and the US Governments are the Immigration Problem

10 to 20 percent of all Mexicans live in the US. (Some state that half of them live here legally.)

With Mexico at the Southern US border, it is no surprise that 86% of all illegal aliens captured in the US are Mexican Nationals. In 2005 there were over one million apprehensions of Mexican nationals either at the borders or within the country itself.

Mexico does nothing to stop this mass exodus from their country. Worse, they actively work to assist illegal alien Mexicans to get into the US. They have explained to the US Government that a Mexican has a right to roam wherever they please within Mexico, including right up to the border. They have also vigorously fought any US attempts to build a border fence to restrict Mexicans from roaming outside their national border into the US.

Once the illegal alien Mexicans get here, the Mexican Consulates provide them with identity documents in the form of “Matricular Consular” ID cards.

Roberto González, 20, a construction worker living here illegally, waited recently in the lobby for the identification card the Mexican government issues known as the “matrícula consular.” The card is honored in the United States by many police agencies, employers and — most important — by banks, which are used by countless immigrants to send billions of dollars home every year. But it is a lightning rod for critics of illegal immigration, who see it as a demonstration of the Mexican government’s helping its citizens live in the United States illegally.

“I will be able to open bank accounts, pay water and light bills, have an easier life here with the consulate and the documents they give,” said Mr. González, one of more than 200 people who have received a card since the consulate opened. - NY Times

Does anyone see a problem with this? Why is it that Americans are hassled to death to ensure they follow the rules and illegal aliens are given all sorts of ways to get around them.

Here is where the US Congress steps in. Not to fight illegal immigration, but to assist it. It is illegal to accept Matricular Consular Identity cards in the US as a form of identification, but congress has prevented this law from being put into action. These identity documents are used as an excuse to permit service to illegal aliens, such as opening bank accounts, even though it is well known that these documents are completely unreliable according to the FBI, and Congress.

Regulation in the federal budget prohibited U.S. businesses from accepting these cards, but an amendment passed September 14, 2004, which Congressman Miller opposed, that pulls this requirement. - Congressman Gary Miller

In the example above, you have proof that the US Government is colluding with the Mexican Government to facilitate illegal immigration. Really, do you think we would have 12 million illegal aliens here if they had a hard time doing things once they got here?

Just to show how reckless the allowance of these IDs are, note that Mexican Matricular Consular ID cards are such a weak form of Identity documents that they are not currently accepted as a valid ID IN MEXICO or even valid for entry into Mexico.

This is a clear exemption from strict identity rules. Also, since the law prohibiting acceptance of these IDs is not in place, they completely subvert other laws that require proper identification.

The Federal Government is not the only ones to blame. The states are also making life easier for illegal aliens once they get here. Virginia learned it's lesson after 9/11 when many of the hijackers were found to have been issued Virginia Drivers licenses. So illegal aliens know not to apply for a drivers license there. They know that they should go to Maryland to apply for one. I know this because my illegal alien friends moved to Maryland and once they had an apartment, they went and obtained Maryland Drivers licenses. They are not the only ones:

Local immigrants say illegal aliens are contributing to Maryland's surge in license applications by flocking to the state when their visas expire or by using the Maryland addresses of relatives.

"I heard that it's easier [to get licenses] here because in other states you need documents, but here it's not required," said 16-year-old Marcela, a Salvadoran immigrant who lives in Silver Spring and did not want to give her last name.

Antonio Lopez, a Guatemalan immigrant living in Hyattsville, said it is common for illegals to come to Maryland to apply for a license because a green card or Social Security card isn't required. - Washington Times

Imagine this, not only are illegal aliens obtaining drivers licenses illegally, they are also giving their names to the press to publish. Seems like they have no fear in Immigration going into Maryland's database to look these illegal aliens up. (Although doing that would surely reduce the number of illegals going to Maryland for licenses.)

Now can you imagine how you would be treated if you went to open up a bank account or apply for a drivers license without proper ID and a Social Security card?

Now with that drivers license, they can get a bank account, credit card and Could probably even apply for social services, which legal alien immigrants are not able to do. In my case, I had to agree to fully support my foreign wife and I am criminally liable if she applies for any Government program such as unemployment or welfare, even if we get divorced! (I am responsible for her until she either works full time for ten years, permanently moves back to her home country or I die.)

There is currently a bill in Congress that, if made into law, will legalize many of the 12 million illegal aliens living in the US. This will do nothing to stop the flow of Mexicans into the US. It however will surely increase the amount of illegal aliens trying to get here for the next declaration of amnesty. (My illegal alien friends moved here a couple years ago when Amnesty was first being talked about in the hopes of getting amnesty.)

If Congress is going to pass this sort of amnesy, they should also offer a Greencard to all Mexicans still living in Mexico (and Canadians too just to be fair) because illegal immigration will continue to be a problem until all Mexicans are here, as long as our Government continues to fight illegal immigration the way they do now.

The Star-Spangled Banner Sung in Chinese from 'Thirty Seconds Over Tokyo'

OK, this is a year late but I only got the video recently. The issue last year was the singing of the Star-Spangled Banner in Spanish. One question was whether it was acceptable to sing the National Anthem in a language other than English. I believe that it is in some cases, such as in this video clip from Thirty Seconds Over Tokyo.

*

*
Google Video Link

In this scene, the children are honoring the crews of the American Bombers that had just bombed Japan by singing the American National Anthem in their language.

As far as the controversy over last year's Spanish language Nuestro Himno, it was wrong for them to alter the words and spirit of the Spanish version which disrespects the meaning conveyed by the original words.

If an immigrant, illegal or otherwise, wants to honor America by singing the Star-Spangled Banner, then they should learn how to sing the official version in English.

Lebanon Pleads for US Aid While Protecting TWA-847 Hijacker Hamadei

Lebanon all of a sudden realizes that it has a problem with militant Muslims hiding out in Palestinian refugee camps, so they have been busy shelling the camp where some are hiding.

They are shelling the camp with artillery because they are prohibited from actually entering the camps by some clearly idiotic law.

The result has been fierce fighting between the Lebanese army and Islamic terrorists who are now popping out of the woodwork. The press has been claiming that the poor Palestinian camps are full of veteran foreign fighters from the Iraq war inferring that the US is somehow to blame while ignoring the meddling and support from Syria for Muslim radicals. Then of course there is support from Hezbollah, which is part of the Government there and almost has complete control of the southern part of the country.

Fighting these terrorists is expensive, so Lebanon is asking the US for more military aid:

The United States said it was considering an urgent request from Lebanon for more US military aid to battle Islamist fighters and warned Syria against meddling in its neighbor's affairs.

State Department spokesman, Sean McCormack, said Lebanon's government had asked for additional funds as fighting intensified, but declined to name an amount or predict when a decision would be made on the request. - Newswire New Zealand

There is a quick way for Lebanon to collect at least $5 million. All they need to do is hand over wanted TWA Flight 847 hijacker Mohammed Ali Hamadei who is living in Lebanon.

June 13, 1985: Terrorists hijack TWA Flight 847, killing Navy Diver Robert Stethem and dumping his body onto the tarmac.

To bring these murderers to justice, the United States Government is offering a reward of up to $5 million. The money is available under a program to obtain information that helps punish those responsible for past international terrorist acts against U.S. persons or property and prevent future such acts. - RFJ

This is the terrorist that (our 'friends') the Germans had caught and refused to hand over to the US. Instead, when they decided to release him, they sent him back to a country that does not have an extradition treaty with the US.

Current and former American officials said they had pushed for two decades to gain custody of Hammadi and try him in a U.S. courtroom, but they ran into political and legal resistance from Germany. U.S. prosecutors originally sought Hammadi's extradition after he was arrested at the Frankfurt airport in 1987, but Germany denied the request and put him on trial locally instead.

Victoria Toensing, a former Justice Department official in the Reagan administration who oversaw efforts to extradite Hammadi in 1987, said German authorities threw obstacles in the way of U.S. prosecutors at that time and only reluctantly cooperated.

"They were not open at all," she recalled. "We knew he would be released early, way back then." - Washington Post

Somehow, Germany was able to get away with not handing over a captured terrorist. Most likely by playing the US for fools, which sadly is not a difficult thing to do. Lebanon, with its hat-in-hand, should not be let off so easy.

Anyway, look at its current situation, their handing over a hero of those who they are fighting against will demonstrate that they mean business. At any rate, since we are getting ready to assist Lebanon, now is the perfect time to get our hands on this one terrorist.

To do so, we need to tell the Lebanese Government that they will not see a dime of aid money until Hamadei is handed over to face American justice. Nobody is forcing Lebanon to take US Aid. However, if they do, they should do it on our terms. We should have at least this one precondition.

(If this were true Mohammed Ali Hamadei would be sitting in a jail cell)

Here is a letter explaining why it is important to get this terrorist:

Date: January 8, 2006 4:15:57 PM PST

To: president@whitehouse.gov

Cc: vicepresident@whitehouse.gov

Subject: ROBERT DEAN STETHEM

Mr. President, I would like to provide you with an explanation as to why Muhammed Ali Hammadi's recent release by Germany, and your Administration's lack of any attempt to prevent it, is so upsetting to our family and to Americans everywhere. I am not writing you out of grief or anger but out of a hope that his example will inspire you to follow act on your own words and the dictates of your conscious in this War on Terror.

Robert Dean Stethem was singled out, beaten beyond recognition and tortured in order to make him scream into a transmitter (so that the tower would send a fuel truck). Not a cry was heard to come from him, despite the brutal beating he endured. Instead he chose to remain silent and endure the beatings because he knew that the only way a rescue attempt could be conducted by U.S. forces was if the aircraft remained on the ground.

After Robert was beaten and tortured and bleeding from puncture wounds all over his body, he was placed next to a 16-year old Australian girl. As bad as Robert was beaten, he had the courage and strength to comfort and console her. He told her that, "She would be okay and that she would get out of here alive." When she tried to return the comfort, he said, "No, I don't think so. I am the only one in my group that is not married and some of the guys have children, too." Some time later, Robert was again taken up to the cockpit and tortured in order to get the fuel. But it didn't work, he would not give in to them.

One of the hijackers, Muhammed Ali Hammadi, was so enraged that he dragged Robert to the door, pulled a trigger and shot Robert in the head. Then he dumped Robert's body onto the tarmac.

While Robert was being dragged to the door, he knew that all he had to do in order to live was to cry into that transmitter, but he wouldn't do it. He would not give in to the demands of the terrorists. He would not allow the honor and dignity of America to be intimidated by the fear and pain that Hammadi and terrorists everywhere represent. Robert sacrificed his life in order to protect our liberty and defend our way of life.

You have rightly said, "Whether we bring our enemies to justice, or bring justice to our enemies, justice will be done." You have truly said that "We are in a fight for our principles, and our first responsibility is to live by them." Robert lived by them. Robert also died by them. The motto of the USS SSTETHEM (DDG-63), named in Robert's honor, is "Steadfast and Courageous." I hope that his example, and the example of other heroes like him can inspire you to understand why allowing Germany to release Hammadi was a wrong. Justice was not done, Robert was not honored and Americans are not safer by allowing Hammadi to return to Lebanon and Hezbollah. You know this, we know this and the American people know this.

The Stethem family - NRO

Our Government owes it to US Navy Sailor Robert Stethem and his family to bring his killer to justice.

Part of the current problem in Lebanon is directly related to the failure of the US to put this terrorist behind bars. As recent news out of Lebanon indicates, Hamadei has been joined by many terrorists who are taking advantage of the safe-haven that Lebanon has provided.

The US does not give aid to Palestine because a terrorist organization, HAMAS, is in charge of the Government there. Before we continue to 'help' Lebanon, perhaps we should determine who exactly we are helping there.

Happy Maritime Day!

Today is Maritime Day in the US.

To get into the maritime mood, go and take a look at the latest edition of Maritime Monday here.

(Merchant Marine Memorial, NY)

National Maritime Day, 2007
A Proclamation by the President of the United States of America

America has a proud maritime history, and the United States Merchant Marine has played a vital role in helping meet our country's economic and national security needs. On National Maritime Day, we honor merchant mariners for their dedication to promoting commerce and protecting our freedom.

During times of peace, the U.S. Merchant Marine helps ensure our economic security by keeping the oceans open to trade. Ships operated by merchant mariners transport goods across our Nation's waterways and on the high seas around the world to connect American businesses and consumers with valuable foreign markets and commodities. The skill and expertise of merchant mariners facilitates trade and helps to strengthen our economy.

In times of war, the Merchant Marine is the lifeline of our troops overseas. By carrying critical supplies, equipment, and personnel, merchant mariners provide essential support to our Armed Forces and help advance the cause of freedom. Today, merchant mariners are supporting operations in Afghanistan and Iraq, and their devotion to duty is a tribute to the generations of men and women who have served our Nation with courage and determination in every conflict in America's history. On this day, and throughout the year, America is grateful for their service.

In recognition of the importance of the U.S. Merchant Marine, the Congress, by joint resolution approved on May 20, 1933, as amended, has designated May 22 of each year as "National Maritime Day," and has authorized and requested that the President issue an annual proclamation calling for its appropriate observance.

NOW, THEREFORE, I, GEORGE W. BUSH, President of the United States of America, do hereby proclaim May 22, 2007, as National Maritime Day. I call upon the people of the United States to mark this observance by honoring the service of merchant mariners and by displaying the flag of the United States at their homes and in their communities. I also request that all ships sailing under the American flag dress ship on that day.

IN WITNESS WHEREOF, I have hereunto set my hand this eighteenth day of May, in the year of our Lord two thousand seven, and of the Independence of the United States of America the two hundred and thirty-first.

GEORGE W. BUSH

European owners shun EU umbrella - LIVERPOOL 16 May – Alfons Guinier, secretary-general of European Community Shipowners’ Association, stood firm against protectionism at an EU level yesterday, alleging that the Jones Act had been responsible for the severe reduction in US-registered shipping. He further warned that protectionist measures would lead to flagging out from European registers and, more significantly, to similar measures from India, China and Japan. He outlined the EC’s Green Paper on maritime policy to members of the seafaring union Nautilus UK at their biennial general meeting in Liverpool. Explaining why he felt it would be unhelpful for the EU to speak on behalf of member states at IMO and ILO, Guinier opined that maritime expertise in individual states would be lost if the single maritime voice came from Brussels. Similarly, a single European ship register would mean issues such as competency, taxation and social security would need to be harmonised by law, whereas they are now moving closer through commercial imperatives. Lamenting the decline in maritime expertise across Europe, Guinier called for some of the EU funding currently going into research to go into training instead. - Fairplay Homepage (Used with Permission)
